The governments of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states have long been searching for the best way to diversify their economies, and in the wake of falling oil prices, they have accelerated their search. Saudi Arabia and the UAE recently launched massive funds with the goal of transforming their economies into “knowledge” format, with the assistance of reputable foreign consultants, and making use of the experiences gained from the partially successful diversification efforts of countries such as Malaysia and Mexico.

Published on LSE Middle East Center blog: Game theory was developed in the wake of World War 2 to assist policymakers in analysing interdependent decision-making, which arises when what you want to do depends upon what others want to do, most notably in situations relating to conflict over resources – the alternative is decision theory, where your decision is independent of others’ choices; for example, deciding whether you want to invest in the stock market or bonds for your retirement. Applying game theory to Iran’s recent threat to block the Strait of Hormuz reveals that Iran is highly unlikely to do so, as the move does not serve the Islamic Republic’s interests.
Published on the LSE Middle East Centre Blog: Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries are an attractive destination for prospective migrants from developing economies due to their high income levels, similar to the countries of the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development). However, unlike the OECD, the GCC countries’ immigration systems allow workers from all skill levels to enter the economy. This is due to the dependence of the labour force on foreign workers (approximately 75% of the GCC workforce is foreign), which in turn derives from young education systems, and rapid development paths.
US presidential candidates have been battling fiercely of late, revealing huge gaps between Democrat and Republican supporters over issues such as taxation, financial sector regulation, firearms ownership laws, and US policy in the Middle East. Despite significant differences among the electorate over what constitute effective and morally desirable policies, one area of agreement among both left-wing and right-wing voters is the desire to diminish the opportunities for foreigners to work and settle in the US. In fact, even the para-fascist candidate, Donald Trump, and the traditional socialist, Bernie Sanders, share the view that migrant workers damage the interests of US citizens. This is a bizarre development for a country that was founded on immigration, and that transformed into an economic powerhouse by opening its doors to migrant workers, as recorded in one of the verses from the sonnet etched on the Statue of Liberty, in the world’s financial capital, New York: “Give me your tired, your poor.”
Published in US News Residents of the Middle East are used to attracting the derision of the rest of the globe's inhabitants with their outlandish conspiracy theories. Local governments' tendency to offer limited justifications for their policy decisions inadvertently contributes to cloak-and-dagger speculation about unremarkable phenomena. Since July 2014, in the domain of oil analysis, the conspiracy theory shoe has switched to the other foot. In an attempt to explain the 70 percent decline in oil prices, leading media outlets have taken to publishing analyses awash with bizarre theories about the root cause.
